12:45 pm - 1:15 pm You’ve Been Elected – Now What?
Congratulations on being elected into office by your peers. That is truly an honor! Now, it is time to get excited about the opportunity you have to serve and to make a difference. Let’s get started.
1:15 pm - 2:15 pm The New Realities for Financial Aid and Financial Aid Associations
Vickie Crupper and Maureen McRae
You’ve received that magical phone call or personal visit. Congratulations abound, you’ve been elected!! You are now a major player in the governance of your association. Whohooooo. But wait a minute, what is it that our association does again? How do I encourage other colleagues to join, or even retain, their membership? Seriously, what have I done?
“The Changing Face of Financial Aid” has been so frequent a topic at our association conferences that it is almost becoming trite. But it is also our new reality. Our profession is in a major shift on a number of levels and before we can lead “them,” we really have to know who “them” is.
This hands-on session will show you how to use Appreciative Inquiry, a positive, discovery based tool; providing you with a way to engage your fellow board members in defining your association. This approach to empowering your colleagues is particularly effective in moving groups forward rather than some other techniques that encourage rehashing of the past. After you have gone through this exercise, you will have added a powerful instrument that can benefit you throughout your leadership year(s), regardless of the topic.
2:15 pm - 2:30 pm Break
2:30 pm - 3:45 pm Communications Styles and Generational Differences
Dino Koff and John View
This session will cover the different types, styles, and levels of communication leaders face. This includes using and knowing your individual style of communicating and how you communicate your association mission and purpose to members and the many constituencies that associations work with. Verbal, written, and electronic forms of communication will be reviewed. This includes listening skills, and communicating with your board members, association members, and elected officials. Additionally, effective management of your time and calendar will be discussed.
3:45 pm - 4:00 pm Break
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm Regional & State Exchange of Ideas
Facilitators– Mary Sommers and Cheryl Lyons
Now is your opportunity to meet and share with your colleagues! What are the new opportunities you have identified for your state or regional organization? What are your concerns? We’ll lead you through a guided small group discussion on various topics relating to our professional organizations and we’ll give you the opportunity to share your ideas with the entire group.

Leadership is work. But there are tools to help you and plenty of other leaders who have adapted these tools to meet their needs. Our toolbox includes agenda templates, Robert Rules of Order, budget templates, and suggestions on public speaking. In this session we’ll give you some opportunities to participate in a role play exercise for some fun hands-on experience using leadership tools.
9:45 am - 10:00 am Break
10:00 am - 11:30 am Fiscal Facts – Old Issues and New Realities
Lisanne Masterson
The responsibility for your association’s sound fiscal management has become a major component of leadership. We still have to provide basic oversight, but philosophical questions and tough decisions are the new norm in determining how we budget and manage our assets.
Through a combination of activities and group discussions, we will explore your role as leaders safeguarding the financial stability of your association – from handling the basic functions, to ensuring that small details are handled, to educating your board and membership, to establishing realistic and achievable goals.
11:30 am - 12:30 pm Speed Dating-NASFAA Style

This interactive and informative session pairs participants with the “experts” for the ultimate Q&A session. Topics covered will include contracts, running a meeting, selecting your team/team building, outreach, ethics and transparency, long range planning, and conflict resolution/reaching a consensus. The experts will move from one table to the next every 15 minutes so you will be able to ask your questions in a small group setting.
